Research on the Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH) for second-language learning is genuinely split: nearly all studies agree that starting a second language earlier gives a statistical advantage and that most late (post-childhood) learners fall short of native-like performance on close scrutiny, but there is real disagreement about whether this reflects a hard biological cutoff or simply the accumulation of other factors (input quality, motivation, education, aptitude). Several studies have found individual late learners who pass as fully native-like, which critics say disproves a strict "critical period," while defenders argue these cases still show subtle non-native traits under detailed testing, or don't disprove that a maturational window still shapes typical outcomes. In short: age effects on ultimate success are real and robust, but the classic idea of a sharply-timed, all-or-nothing biological window is increasingly seen as too simple.

Age of starting robustly predicts eventual proficiency

Across many studies, the age at which someone begins learning a second language is one of the strongest and most consistent predictors of how proficient they eventually become, especially for pronunciation and grammar.4,6,7,8,9,10,16

Decline looks steep then flattens, not a sudden cliff

A large cross-linguistic study of English and Hebrew learners found a steep drop in grammar learning ability before age 18, followed by a much flatter decline up to age 40 -- a pattern its authors read as support for a critical period, but which others argue is inconsistent with a single sharp cutoff.6,10

Some late learners do reach native-like levels

Multiple studies have identified individual adult learners -- including people who started learning after puberty -- who perform indistinguishably from native speakers on grammar and pronunciation tests, which researchers cite as evidence against a strict, all-or-nothing critical period.1,2,5,13,14,20

Native-like performers still show subtle gaps under close scrutiny

When researchers use very detailed, demanding tests rather than casual judgments, even late learners who initially 'pass' as native speakers often show small, hard-to-detect non-native patterns, and this happens even in the small number of early learners who don't reach fully native-level performance.8,9,21

Phonology (accent) may be more age-constrained than grammar

Several studies suggest a person's age when they start learning affects pronunciation/accent more strongly and permanently than it affects their ability to learn grammar, where late learners have a better chance of reaching high, even native-like, levels.7,11,16

Counter-evidence studies have real design flaws

A close review of studies claiming to disprove the critical period found that in every case there were one or more methodological problems (such as not confirming the learner truly reached native-level proficiency), which the reviewer argues means these studies don't actually threaten the idea of maturational limits.4

Brain-activity studies muddy the picture further

Studies measuring real-time brain responses (event-related brain potentials) to grammar in a second language have found that late learners who reach high proficiency can show brain response patterns very similar to native speakers, challenging the idea that adult brains process a second language in a fundamentally different, permanently limited way.13,18,20

Some researchers argue the field should move past debating a single 'critical period' altogether, since comparing learners only to native-speaker norms and treating age as the one crucial variable oversimplifies a picture that also involves heritage-language speakers, brain plasticity research, and social attitudes toward non-native speakers.6,12,15,17

Heritage speakers complicate the age story

People who learned a language from birth at home but became dominant in another language later in life (heritage speakers) can end up performing worse in their first, 'native' language than late learners do in their second language -- showing that early exposure alone does not guarantee lasting native-level ability.15,17,19

What to do with this

The research doesn't support telling adult learners that native-like fluency is impossible -- multiple studies document adults who reached it, particularly in grammar. But it does suggest realistic planning: expect pronunciation/accent to be the hardest area to fully "fix" after childhood, so if a natural accent matters to you, prioritize focused pronunciation work early and consistently rather than assuming it will resolve itself with time. Because studies consistently show that education level, amount of real language use, and personal aptitude/motivation matter as much as starting age, adult learners should focus energy on what they can control: maximizing quality input and actual use of the language, pursuing formal instruction, and finding methods matched to personal learning strengths, rather than treating a "missed critical period" as a fixed ceiling on progress.

  • The sources are drawn mostly from academic SLA research using grammar-judgment tasks, accent ratings, and lab measures -- not from studies of self-directed adult learners using apps or casual conversation practice, so translating these findings into everyday study advice involves some inference.
  • Findings are also mixed by design: some studies define "success" as passing casual native-speaker judgment, others require passing extremely detailed linguistic tests, and the conclusions drawn (for or against a critical period) depend heavily on which standard is used.
  • Several sources are decades-old theoretical or dissertation works, and researchers cited here openly disagree with one another, so no single number or age cutoff should be taken as settled fact.
