The short answer

This question isn't really about French — it's a general one about language learning that happens to come from a French learner, so the honest answer is general: sign languages are full, complex human languages, and learning one as a second language works through the same basic acquisition processes as learning a second spoken language, with a few twists that come from using your hands and face instead of your voice. None of the sources here address French Sign Language and French learning specifically in a way that would let us say anything unique about "French learners and sign language" beyond one small French-focused study noted below.

Sign languages are real, full languages

Research shows sign languages have all the hallmarks of spoken languages — their own grammar, word-building rules, sentence structure, and meaning system — and the brain processes them the same way it processes speech, just through the eyes and hands instead of the ears and mouth.1,2,11

Age of learning matters more than input channel

Across several studies, how early someone is first exposed to any first language predicts how well they can learn language later — and this holds whether that first language is spoken or signed. In other words, the 'sensory-motor modality' (whether a language is spoken or signed) doesn't change the basic age-related pattern.1,2,3

'Sensory-motor modality' just means whether a language travels through sound and voice, or through gesture and sight. The finding is that the timing of first language exposure matters much more than which channel the language uses.

Your existing language skills transfer to sign

For hearing adults learning a sign language as a new second language, skills from their existing spoken language — vocabulary size and skill at telling sounds apart — predicted how much sign vocabulary and overall proficiency they gained, even though the two languages use completely different channels.4

Signs that look like their meaning are easier to learn

Hearing non-signers learned new signs fastest and remembered them best the next day when a sign's shape visually resembled its meaning and also matched a natural gesture people would already make for that idea.5

A sign for 'drinking' that mimics the hand motion of bringing a cup to the mouth is easier to remember than an arbitrary handshape with no visual connection to drinking.

Learning a sign language is still like learning any L2

Adults learning a sign language as their second language go through recognizable second-language learning stages — they self-correct their errors less often as they get more fluent, they lean on fingerspelling more early on and less as their sign vocabulary grows, and they gradually build up more sophisticated storytelling and perspective-taking techniques.7,9,10,13,14

'Fingerspelling' means spelling out a word letter-by-letter with the hands when the learner doesn't yet know the actual sign for it — similar to a beginner in a spoken language falling back on describing a word they don't know.

Sign language classrooms give feedback differently

In observed sign language classrooms, teachers most often corrected students by simply repeating the sentence back correctly, and students frequently copied that correction — a pattern that looks different from typical feedback patterns reported in spoken-language classrooms.8

French Sign Language findings so far are limited

The one study here focused specifically on French Sign Language looked at brain responses in deaf signers and found that meaning-based grammar errors produced a recognizable brain response, similar to other sign and spoken languages, but grammar-structure errors did not show the expected brain signal, and age of first sign exposure did not clearly affect either type of processing in this data.12

Sign language access supports reading and writing in French too

A review of research on deaf youth's literacy, including studies of French deaf children who use French Sign Language, found that early and strong access to a sign language was linked with better reading and writing outcomes, and that skilled deaf readers tend to rely on visual word-recognition strategies rather than sounding words out.6

What to do with this

  • Because this question is general rather than French-specific, the practical guidance is general too: if you're curious about learning a sign language (on its own, or alongside French), treat it like learning any second language rather than assuming it works completely differently just because it's visual.
  • The earlier you're exposed to any first language — signed or spoken — the more it seems to help later language learning, so this isn't a reason to worry it's "too late" as an adult second-language learner specifically, since the strong age effects found in these studies were mainly about first-language acquisition, not adult second-language study.
  • If you already speak one or more languages well, that skill (vocabulary size, sound/pattern discrimination) seems to carry over and help when picking up a sign language, so your existing French or English ability is likely an asset, not a hindrance.
  • Signs that visually resemble their meaning, or that overlap with natural gestures you'd already make, tend to be learned and remembered faster, so paying attention to those visual/gestural connections can speed up early vocabulary building.
  • Expect early reliance on "spelling out" unfamiliar words with your hands to fade naturally as your sign vocabulary grows, much as you might lean on paraphrasing an unknown French word before you know the right term.

Worth knowing

  • None of the provided sources study people learning sign language specifically because they are also learning French, so there is no direct evidence about interaction effects between the two.
  • Only one source deals with French Sign Language itself, and it is a narrow neuroscience study; a second discusses French deaf children's literacy but not adult L2 sign learning.
  • Most of the sign-language-acquisition evidence here comes from American, Dutch, Swedish, and Irish sign languages, so findings are generalized from those contexts rather than confirmed for French Sign Language.
  • Findings on age effects mostly concern people learning their very first language late (for example, deaf children not exposed to any accessible language early in life), which is a different situation from an adult who already has a fluent first language choosing to add a sign language as an additional one.
