Yes, on balance the evidence says music and singing can help pronunciation, though the effect is real but modest and uneven: it seems to help most with individual sounds and general accuracy, and less with things like intonation and stress. Singing outperforms plain speech practice for pronunciation

Several classroom studies comparing a singing group to a group doing the same material through speaking/reciting found the singing group ended up with better pronunciation and vocabulary scores.1,2,5,10

In one study with 95 Chinese teenage English learners, one group learned song lyrics by singing them and another by just reciting them; the singing group came out ahead on pronunciation and vocabulary tests afterward.

Benefits concentrate on individual sounds, not rhythm/intonation

Song-based instruction tends to improve accuracy of individual vowels and consonants ('segmental' sounds) more reliably than it improves the melody-like features of speech — stress and intonation — which sometimes show little or no gain.7,8

One Spanish-specific data point: pitch perception predicts Spanish pronunciation

In a study of English-speaking undergraduates learning Spanish, musical training itself did not predict better Spanish pronunciation, but a specific skill — the ability to perceive small pitch differences — did predict it.14

Early computer-based Spanish pronunciation/intonation tool showed mixed but promising results

An older study using computer software to teach Spanish intonation to classroom learners found improvement in roughly 40-50% of students, with the qualitative feedback more encouraging than the still-unclear quantitative results.15

  • Use songs and singing as one tool among several for pronunciation, not a stand-alone fix.

Worth knowing

  • Almost all of this evidence comes from learners of English or French, mostly in EFL/ESL classrooms — genuinely Spanish-specific research is very limited in these sources (only one study on English speakers learning Spanish, plus an older, methodologically uncertain study on computer-taught Spanish intonation).
  • So while the general pattern (songs help segmental pronunciation, less so intonation/stress) likely applies broadly, we can't say with confidence how strongly it applies to Spanish's particular sound system.
  • Several of the studies are small (dozens of participants), short in duration (a few weeks), and some rely on self-report or qualitative observation rather than strict acoustic measurement, so effect sizes should be read as suggestive rather than definitive.
  • There's also disagreement in the literature about whether musical aptitude reliably predicts pronunciation gains across all learner groups, since a learner's native-language sound system can outweigh any musical advantage.
