Explicit cognate lessons build a transferable strategy

When Dutch-speaking children with a language disorder were given 12 short lessons over 14 weeks explicitly teaching them how English and Dutch words relate to each other, they not only recognized the words they'd practiced but also recognized new, untaught similar words afterward — meaning they had learned a general strategy for spotting cross-language similarity, not just memorized a word list.1

Awareness training doesn't always speed up learning

In a separate classroom study with Polish learners of English, simply making students aware that certain words were similar across languages did not help them learn those words any faster than words that weren't similar, even though similar words were already known better before the study started.3

Brains automatically activate both languages

Multiple lab studies show that when bilinguals see or hear a word that resembles a word in their other language, both languages' word-representations get activated in the brain automatically, without the person trying to compare the languages on purpose — this shows up as faster or slower reaction times depending on the task.5,6,8,10,13

  • Most of the strongest evidence here comes from lab-based word-recognition experiments (measuring split-second reaction times) or from bilingual children raised with two languages from birth, rather than from typical adult classroom learners studying a new language from scratch — so some findings may not translate directly to, say, an adult self-studying with an app.
  • The languages studied are mostly European language pairs with shared roots (Dutch-English, Spanish-English, Polish-English, French-English, Frisian-Dutch), so it's unclear how much applies to language pairs with very different writing systems or no shared vocabulary history (English and Japanese).
  • Findings on whether explicit "awareness" of cognates speeds up learning are mixed — one study found real strategy-building benefits, another found no extra benefit from awareness-raising alone — so the picture is genuinely nuanced rather than settled.
