Does language learning make you smarter in unrelated topics?

  • That said, language learning is not wasted effort even from a brain-health angle: in older adults specifically, structured courses or apps have shown modest, measurable gains on tasks involving focus and ignoring distraction, similar to what dedicated brain-training programs offer, and one trial found it was rated more enjoyable than brain-training apps — enjoyment and consistency matter for any activity that might help maintain cognitive sharpness with age.
  • If cognitive benefit is your priority, pick whatever engaging, sustained mental activity you'll actually stick with (language learning, music, or dedicated brain training) rather than assuming language learning has a unique edge.
  • The clearer and better-supported reasons to learn a language remain the language skills themselves and the social, cultural, and practical value of being able to communicate with more people.
