Are flipped classes effective, especially for learning Arabic?

The short answer

Across dozens of studies, flipped classes (where students watch videos or read material before class, then use class time for practice and discussion) tend to help language learners more than traditional lecture-based classes — the effect sizes reported in large meta-analyses are large and positive. For Arabic specifically, the evidence is thinner and more mixed: several small Arabic studies report gains in speaking, motivation, and self-directed learning, but one recent controlled study found no statistically significant advantage over conventional teaching, showing that flipping alone is not a guaranteed fix.

Large positive effect in second-language meta-analyses

Two large-scale meta-analyses pooling dozens of studies (69 and 56 studies respectively) on English as a second/foreign language found that flipped classrooms produced notably better learning outcomes than traditional lecture-based classes, with effect sizes described as large.2,5

However, one 2025 controlled experiment on Arabic vocabulary/outcomes at an Islamic senior high school found the flipped 'mastery' method produced no statistically significant advantage over conventional teaching, even though scores did rise somewhat.4,6,7

Electronic flipped modules can be highly effective when well-designed

One Indonesian study that built a purpose-made digital learning module for a flipped Arabic class found large jumps in test scores (pretest average 52 to posttest average 90) and rated the module 'effective' by a standard improvement-scoring method, alongside very high approval from teachers and students.1

Teachers and students generally hold positive attitudes

Qualitative research with Arabic-language lecturers in Jordan found most instructors believed flipped teaching increased student interaction, collaborative learning, and learner independence, although a couple of instructors worried it could let less-motivated students fall behind.3

Self-directed learning is required and not everyone manages it well

Because flipped classes require students to study material on their own before class, several studies found that students' ability to self-regulate — manage their own motivation, time, and study habits — strongly affects whether the approach actually helps them, and some students struggled to keep up with this independent workload.4,7,8

  • Because success depends heavily on actually doing the pre-class work, be honest with yourself (or your students) about self-discipline: a flipped class only works if the 'before class' step is completed.
  • Finally, treat any single glowing report on a flipped Arabic course with some skepticism, since the direct Arabic evidence is mixed — one well-designed digital module produced dramatic gains, while a separate controlled study found no significant improvement over normal teaching.

Worth knowing

  • Most of the strongest, largest-scale evidence (the two big meta-analyses) comes from English-language learning research, not Arabic specifically, so conclusions about Arabic have to be drawn cautiously from a much smaller set of studies.
  • The Arabic-specific studies vary widely in quality and design: some are small qualitative interview studies, some are pre/post-test designs without a proper control group, and results conflict, ranging from very large gains to no significant effect.
  • Several studies also rely on students' or teachers' self-reported perceptions rather than objective test performance, which can be influenced by novelty (people may respond positively to any new teaching method at first) rather than the flipped method itself specifically.
